The Handmade Life - The Importance of Crafty Friends

Monday, February 20, 2017
Hi Everyone,

I was lucky enough to have a dear friend of mine come to stay for the weekend. And it totally inspired a new series of blog posts; The Handmade Life. And this post is all about crafty friends.

I am one of those lucky people who has a small group of really close friends. Friends who are always there when I need them, even if they're jetting off around the world, living life to the fullest. Everyone in the world has their 'thing' and my friends all have their own amazing 'things'. Climbers, explorers, photographers, interiors designers, you name it! (Aren't they incredible!) And, of course, I have my 'business friends' who I can talk serious with and who all have their own 'taking over the world thing!'

-But my 'thing' is Handmade.

When you're building a handmade life, you need someone to talk to that knows what the hell you're going on about. Someone who gets just as excited as you when a new pattern is released, or a new fabric range comes out! It inspires your work, makes you find a niche in what you do and can even give you the strength to carry on making when things might be hard.

I'm lucky to have a fellow craft obsessed chick in my life, Lexy, who loves everything handmade. She can look at my 'work in progress' items and give me tips on how I can mix it up, and gives me a confidence boost when I've proudly sewn something super neat. I've come to realise it's incredibly important to have someone who can help you out with your projects, like pinning, fitting that shirt, sharing ideas on new patterns, fabrics choices and what would work best.

When you've got that wedding coming up and all those questions start to make you panic; what shall I wear? What colours would look nice with this? Bounce options around. Your friends will always have great ideas!

You may even have a friend who wants to get into all things handmade - help them! Start them off on a simple project. Have a crafty weekend teaching them to sew. Buy them some cool craft supplies for their birthday!
When you have a passion for something - share that passion! Don't keep it to yourself, you'll have a lot more fun with it when you can share it with someone like you.

If you don't feel you have a 'crafty friend' why not join a local craft group, do a workshop, chat to stall holders at a craft fair, join a craft forum online, or even start your own handmade group! There's so many ways to meet like-minded people. And as the handmade community grows, it's becoming even easier.

I'm excited to carry on building my handmade life. And at the moment that involves creating a handmade wardrobe. Watch this space for more of my makes.
In these photos Lexy and I are wearing our handmade Tilly and the Buttons Cleo pinafores.

I hope you enjoyed this post. I had a lot of fun writing it. Let me know if you have a crafty friend, or crafty group! I'd love to hear your stories.

Happy Handmade!
