African Print Culottes

Wednesday, July 18, 2018

Hi Everyone,

So the lovely Adaku from African Print Fabric company; Dovetailed sent me some gorgeous fabric to use for my next project. And I was so excited to make something with it when she sent me this amazing print.
I've been wanting to make a pair of culottes for ages, and this fabric gave me the excuse to. I've used the Holly jumpsuit pattern by By Hand London and hacked it to make a cropped, pleated version. Luckily Elisalex from By Hand London did a blog post on how to do it, so it was a great guide for changing the original trouser pattern.

I'm obsessed with the bright colours and intricate design on this fabric. I really do think this fabric suits this pattern hack perfectly. Boxy pleats were so easy to do, even though I washed the fabric to make it softer, it still holds it's structure really well.

I'm really pleased with how these have turned out. I have done a complete 'sewalong' on my Youtube channel which you can watch HERE. I really hope you like what I made and if you want to try sewing some items with gorgeous African prints, then you can shop on the Dovetailed Etsy shop and get 10% off with code WELCOME10.

Comment below if you now want to have a go with African fabric and expand the colour and patterns in your handmade wardrobe.

Happy Handmade!

  1. Beautiful Culottes! Just love this fabric and it's shown off so beautifully in this style.

  2. That's a beautiful silhouette. I'd love to try wax print but buying it 6 yards at a time has frightened me off a bit...now if only I was in England I could try it 1 or 2 at a time! Sigh. They're so vibrant and exciting!

    1. Thank you so much! And yes I love the patterns too, but yes 6 yards sounds a lot! x
